The good news is that CalTrans got all those cleared no problem and the cars were driven out. The bad news is there are multiple slides closer to LC.

Time to chain up!

Here is ACH ~ 1 mile past Newcombs from last week
Location: Three point @ junction of Santa Clara Divide Road

Probablly not ideal riding conditions, but if you had nordic gear you'd be in business.

Mt. Waterman might open next weekend

That is SO AWESOME to see!!! Hopefully the road will be fixed by Spring. There's some great hiking back there and some cool waterfalls I'd like to see again.

Newcomb's Ranch is open - but ONLY from the Antelope Valley side.

A couple of our regular 100-mile Hamburger run folks have said that Newcomb's is holding out hope that they'll be able to make it.

From one of our group who just rode up Friday:

Quote:
I road up to Newcomb’s Friday afternoon

They were very happy to see me – or anyone!!

I talked with the owners for a few minutes. Things are very tough. They plan to be open Friday (Short hours) Sat and Sunday only

The road is only open to the Antelope Valley, but I hear a rumor that a second route maybe open. The Crest Highway to La Canada will be closed for at least a year and maybe several more.

Bottom line is they need business from this side of the mountain

Steve

It's alive. . . It's A-L-I-V-E!-Newcomb's lives

Planned ride:
http://www.socalsvriders.org/forums/...threadid=30482

Synopsis-Wonderful ride-sun, snow, some rocks and an Aprilla rider OTS (over the side).

Newcomb's is open! (only on the weekends). they're on a generator and they need your business.

Rode all the way past the tunnels to the gate at old Hwy 39. Lots of small and big rocks on the road (yes the sharp kind of rocks) past Mt. Waterman but rode IS open.

On the return- a guy on an Aprilla, who we saw at Newcombs and likes to ride in Teva sandles!, went WAY over the side between the tunnel and the AFH turnoff. Helivac'd out and we sat for 1.5 hr during the extrication. he should be OK and, yes, excessive speed on his part was the culprit.

drove up to mount wilson via big tujunga - afh - upper big tujunga - ach recently. entry to big tujunga is rough but passable via bikes. roads were clear except for some loose stuff on afh.

Rode the ach last night. The part from sunvalley is rough for the first 5-6 miles with some dirt from the trucks. The 2 is as clean as i ever seen it. Rode past the gate and there were some rocks on the road for the first 2-3 miles. after that not too bad. If you stay within the speed limit +\- 5mph its a no issue. Do watch for deer lots and lots of deer. and they are only past the gate for some reason. No cops no bikes and no cars.

yeah, the road is pretty clean most all the way. I went from Sun Valley to Wrightwood and back. Roads were not crowded at all, and there were hardly any cars. It was kinda weird at first going through the burn areas, the road seemed so unfamiliar... but thankfully there's still plenty of green out past Newcomb's

here's a pic from this past sunday at islip saddle:
